Marvin Mims Scouting Report Introduction
Marvin Mims is a wide receiver who started his college career with the Oklahoma Sooners after making a name for himself in high school football. During his time at Lone Star High School in Texas, Mims set records for career receiving yards (5,485) and single-season receiving yards (2,629) while also hauling in 117 receptions and 32 receiving touchdowns during his senior year. These impressive stats helped him become a highly sought-after recruit with Oklahoma winning out in the end.
Mims quickly established himself as an explosive playmaker for the Sooners, becoming their go-to guy in the 2022 season. Averaging more than 20 yards per reception in 2021 and 2022, Mims excels at creating vertical separation, tracking the ball, and adjusting to make plays in the air. He is a consistent finisher, rarely dropping catches and has a competitive edge that makes him dangerous with the ball in his hands, able to weave his way through opposing defenses with ease.
Despite being a smaller receiver, Mims has shown that he can more than hold his own with larger players. His toughness and competitive fire extend to his blocking abilities, where he excels despite his size disadvantage. His route-running is also impressive, displaying quickness, fluidity, and elusiveness that allows him to create separation consistently. However, concerns remain about his ability to play through contact and his suitability to an outside receiver role due to his size limitations. It’s believed he may be better suited to a slot role in the NFL where he can maximize his strengths.
Despite these concerns, Mims possesses every trait necessary to become an outstanding receiver at the professional level. He has the potential to be a dynamic WR2/3 that provides field-stretching ability to his team and a dangerous yards-after-catch skill. While he may not be a high-volume target, his athleticism and ability to win at every level of the field make him a valuable addition to any offense. With further development, Mims has the potential to become a star in the NFL.
Strengths
Marvin Mims is a skilled football player who possesses several impressive qualities that make him stand out on the field. Despite his size, Mims plays with great competitiveness, which allows him to play bigger than his physical stature. This competitive edge is particularly evident in his ability to high-point the ball, which is when he jumps vertically to catch a ball that is thrown at a high point. This skill is crucial in contested catch situations where he has good hands and is not afraid to attack the ball to bring it in.
Mims is a natural playmaker who is particularly effective when he has the ball in his hands, making him a vertical threat. He displays excellent acceleration, allowing him to quickly reach his top speed and stack up against cornerbacks. Additionally, he has excellent body control, which enables him to contort himself to make difficult catches and work well on back-shoulder throws.
As a player who consistently puts up elite numbers, Mims’ experience as a punt returner is another valuable asset that could come into play in his future professional career. His ability to excel in catch-and-run situations is also noteworthy, thanks to his good vision and aptitude for making tacklers miss in space. His competitive nature is evident through his willingness to break tackles and give maximum effort as a downfield blocker.
Mims is often used on deep routes, either getting separation down the sideline or over the middle on crossing routes by extending his arms rather than relying solely on his speed. He is also a violent runner with the ball in his hands, which makes him very effective working outside the numbers. His excellent ball-tracking skills allow him to do the little things downfield, such as leaving ample room on the sideline for his quarterback to drop in a throw.
Overall, Marvin Mims is a multifaceted football player who brings several impressive skills to the game. His competitiveness, high-pointing ability, natural playmaking skills, and experience as a punt returner all make him an attractive prospect for any team in the future. His dynamic presence on the field is sure to make him an asset no matter where he ends up playing professionally.
Weaknesses
Marvin Mims, a talented wide receiver for the Oklahoma Sooners, is on the smaller side at a height of 5 feet 11 inches and slightly over 180 pounds. Due to his stature, Mims may struggle to compete with larger defensive backs on the outside and will likely be limited to playing in the slot position.
In addition to size limitations, Mims was underutilized during the 2021 season. As a result, he has not had the opportunity to expand his skillset and develop a wide route tree.
Despite these challenges, Mims has demonstrated that he can be productive as a receiver and a return man.
